HW Cricket

Cricket is one of the most followed and watched sports in the world. Especially in a country like India, it is followed like a religion. How do we make sure that a cricket lover is always connected to the sport, not missing out on any of the action. That’s where the HW Cricket app comes into “Play”.

It is quite literally like being in a room full of friends of different nationalities, as they debate, vent, pontificate, illuminate, rant, grunt …whatever the cricket brings out of them.

Conceptualisation

HoldingWilley has always been "By the fans, for the fans" cricket website. It offers a special experience of enjoying live scores with unique game analysis tools like COW, Form Factor, Dominance etc., tongue-in-cheek cartoons, some wacky tweets & passionate articles from writers across the world. With this app, it tries to give cricket fans what they really deserves!

The motto was to come up with an app that is simple to use, incredibly fast and does not take up tons of space on your phone.

Design

The biggest challenge we faced was to keep the user experience simple. Adding to many complex interactions would defeat the purpose of creating the app.

To easily locate the fixture of your interest, we represented matches as cards on the homescreen.

It’s imperative for a fan to know the latest happenings of the game. We came up with an innovative way of showing the ball-to-ball updates inspired by the over indicator on television. It gave you a quick glance at the latest 6 deliveries bowled in the game.

Scores

The fun of watching a game increases when you have friends for company. Thus we made sharing scores easy by providing a share button right upfront.

Chance of Winning

COW or the Chance of Winning predictor is the most unique feature of the app. It is a tool built to predict, at the end of each over, the chances each team has of actually going on to win the match. it takes into account all the variables - strength of the teams playing, resources lost, resources left, pitch conditions and well, everything else, distills it down to a single percentage and summarizes the past, present and future of the match in question.

Creation of a Middleware

The data shown in the app is fetched from the Cricket API. It has a limit on the number of requests allowed in a stipulated period of time. This could restrict the number of users who received the information. To solve this deadlock we came up with the idea of creating a middleware layer. The middleware would make a single request to the API, fetch the data and store it. It would then broadcast this to all the active uses. This ensured that we did not breach the limit and also that no one was left out.
